I've been a delinquent blogger again, but have some new ideas.... and a few books to review. One of these books is "We'll Get Through This Together". It reminds me of the power of pet therapy in the hospital or even at home - for young and old.
The book reassures children as they face their time in new environments, such as a scary hospital; and hooked up to machines, taking medicine and not feeling well. It helps the child, and perhaps parents, see that they can face any hardships or health battle with their loved ones. It also shows these loved ones can be family pets or dogs and other animal healers in pet therapy programs.
Pets are healing because they can divert our attention away from what is painful and frightening. They are also loving, non-judgmental and comforting when we are stressed and and anxious.
The story focus is on a child facing cancer treatment, but it is relevant for those facing any medical care. In addition, it acknowledges the incidence of cancer in dogs (47% of of deaths in dogs). Proceeds from the book go toward cancer research for treatment and cures ... at both ends of the leash.
