I read a great paper on use of remote health monitoring to save costs and enhance lives. Vital Signs Via Broadband is really worth reading by the following.
- All policy makers
- Anyone wanting ideas for how to use (apply) remote monitoring technology
- Anyone wanting to better understand costs of care and how some of these, such as, travel and transportation can be significantly reduced.
- Anyone wanting to understand prevention and see examples of interventions.
- Anyone wanting to address scarcity of health resources in their community.
At the end, the author, Robert Litan, reviews his support for his cost savings estimates in four disease/conditions (Heart, Diabetes, COPD, Chronic Wound) and it all adds up to $197 billion over the next 25 years.
He also points out that to be really successful, we need "smart networks" that ensure that patients' critical data is secure and that communications are not disrupted.
