Not many posts ago, I stated that I was an old risk manager. Well, I'm even an older medical staff coordinator and am supportive of an update to the The Joint Commission standards for medical staff bylaws.
The draft standards also provide a nice overview of the relationship between the hospital, medical staff and governing body. I share this because many people don't understand the unique nature of this business relationship. The medical staff is self-governing and the hospital (administration and governing body) provides the facilities and resources necessary for acute healthcare to occur. That means that great hospital administrators can collaborate with physicians to deliver high quality and safe care. Those who can't, don't last very long.
Think of the relationship between the governing body, hospital administration and medical staff as a three-legged stool. The three must work effectively together in order to realize success and not topple over. Can you think of any other business that has this type of third dimension?
