Earlier this year I eagerly anticipated returning home and visiting New Orleans! After the hurricane, it looked liked there might not be much to visit in New Orleans, but now I see an upcoming trip as a way for me to help stimulate the economy. (Yes, I will also derive some benefit from the muffalata at Central Grocery, beignets & cafe au lait from Cafe du Monde, and oysters on the half-shell from Cooter Browns.)
You can join me without ever leaving your home as a result of technology! So here are a few of my favorite sites:
To start, visit the New Orleans Blog for local information. You can learn about merchants and keep informed on the rebuilding effort. Today I learned that France is contributing disaster relief and cultural assistance. Who would have thought?
Cajun Grocer - wide selection of products from Louisiana
Tony's - great seasoning blends and roux
Tobasco - it's not just hot sauce (try their soy sauce or chipotle sauce)
www.FishermansCoveSeafood.com a market in my old neighorhood!
Zapps Potato Chips! The chips are wonderful and the website is entertaining too!
www.brennansneworleans.com - That talented family of cooks!
www.zatarain.com - My favorites are the supplies for boils and frys.
www.pcpecan.com - The best pecans are from Bergerons!
http://www.evanscreolecandy.com/ - Pralines (candy)
http://www.konriko.com/ - Louisiana Rices from America's oldest rice mill!
http://www.auntsallys.com/ - More pralines!
www.frenchmarket.org - America's oldest city market in the New Orleans French Quarter!
And, then there is the Central Grocery Store - an old world Italian store with no website. However, they do ship their world famous muffalata sandwich. Just give them a call 504-523-1620.
Check out the Tulane Alumni Southern California weblog for a much longer list!
Christina: Great information! Great Ideas! It's good to hear from you. Have a Merry Christmas. I will be ordering several things. Kate
