Dr. Andrew White

It seems that any attempt to reduce patient anxiety would be worth it. My patients don't seem too nervous, but I don't do surgery. Rarely, my patients show some real anxiety about treatment plans and procedures and I'm sure that has a role on their whole experience. There needs to be a connection between dr and patient. The patient needs to be relaxed enough to understand the doctor and trust in his judgement.

I like the idea of having some stuff taken care of before-hand; takes pressure off the patient.

Elizabeth Bailey

Thank you so much for writing about my book, The Patient's Checklist! Like you, I feel that patients and families must be actively engaged with their doctors and everyone on their care teams to get safe, quality care. My family learned that the hard way. But how and where to start? It can seem overwhelming and confusing to someone facing a medical crisis, already scared and vulnerable--most especially when confronting our hospitals and their complex and often disorganized and impersonal-seeming delivery of care.

Patients are concerned with the human experience of illness and healing. But doctors and nurses are too. This essential common bond can get swept aside because of the ways in which our health care system does not work for any of us. I think you are helping to lead the way in helping all of us - patients and providers - work together. It's the only way.
