Five things that matter most to ...

In 2005 I posted on some research that is worth revisiting.   It found that the five things that matter most to patients are:

  1. Doctors treat patients with courtesy and respect.

  2. Doctors explain the facts in a way that patients can understand.

  3. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff do everything they can to help patients with their pain.

  4. The hospital room and bathroom are kept clean

  5. Patients get information in writing about symptoms or health problems to look at after they leave the hospital.

I also went back in my posts and found what nurse managers want, but believe this is what most hospital employees what as well.

1 Communication

• Availability of boss to listen and provide guidance

• Clear expectations and feedback

2 Quality of Care

• Managers want to take pride in their units

3 Effective Administrative Systems

• Meaningful orientations and professional development

• Compensation linked to performance

• Effective recruiting for staff nurses

• Sufficient staffing so the manager doesn't fill in as a staff nurse

4 Work/Life Balance

• Flexible scheduling

• Relief from constant on-call duty

5 Administrative Management Philosophy That Empowers Managers

• Managers should take part in planning and decision making

• Managers don't want to be micromanaged

As administrators, it is our job to meet the needs of both of these stakeholder groups.
